THEFT FROM EMPLOYER
SMALL SUMS OF MONEY PROBATION FOR LABOURER The theft of sums of money amounting to £1 16s was admitted by a labourer, Arthur Williarfi Young, aged 22, when lie appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. The money, which was the property of Kathleen Louisa Grayson, was stolen between March 2-' i and April 2(3. Detective-Sergeant Walsh said that last month accused called on Mrs. Grayson and said ho was looking for work. He was given a job as handy man at £1 a week and found. Directly after he was given this job he began to steal small sums of money from the kitchen, Mrs. Grayson's bedroom and her purse. "Accused could only be described as a sneak thief," said Mr. Walsh. He was only a recent arrival in Auckland and not been in trouble previously. The complainant was ready to overlook the thefts and take accused back if he was given an opportunity. Accused explained his thefts as caused by a sudden weakness and committed on the spur of the moment. He said he had not been in trouble before and would pay the money back. "I will give you an opportunity of trving to make good," said the magistrate, in placing accused on probation for 12 months, and ordering him to make restitution of the money.
