! ROYAL MIMIC AGAIN LICKEM FINISHES STRONGLY HACK PLATE TO CORROBOREE [by TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday In the Kairanga Hurdles the first day's winner. Royal Mimic, won more decisively than on the previous occasion. lie Gallante made all the running except for a couple of early fences, when Collision was prominent, but the latter lost ground at each obstacle and soon retired. Beau Gallante made a faulty jump at the second to last fence, giving "Royal Mimic sole charge, with Invictus, Manawatu and Count Willonyx challenging. Royal Mimic was first over the last fence and drew out for a clearcut win. Beau Gallante weakened and gave way to Manawatu and Count W illonvx, the former staying on the better for a decisive second. The winner gave an excellent display. It was only his third race over hurdles and he looks certain to go on to higher honours. Manawatu improved and should be well forward for early steeplechasing. Bluffer Fails Bluffer was backed down to a very short price in the Juvenile, but, failing ! to jump out well, she was always in the rear. Greenwich streaked away in front and on the turn was three lengths out from Laughing Chief, Settlement, Hunting Lore, Gay Molly, Scarf' Dance and.Lickem. Greenwich was still well clear in the straight, but she began to stop badly over the last furlong, and Lickem, hard ridden, got up to beat her on the post. Settlement was a moderate third, with Scarf Dance, Son and Heir, Gay Molly and Hunting Lore handy. Lickem put up a solid performance, as lie had to come from a good way back. He is by Loekliam from an unraced sister to Kilboy. The torrid pace set by Greenwich had all the others in difficulties, though Bluffer's failure was due to a bad start. The Buzzer won the Tamatete Handicap like a good horse. He caught the tapes at the start and lost ground, but he had the brilliance to go up behind the leading bunch before leaving the straight. He then waited until nearing the straight, where the leaders were Taitoru and Lowenberg from a big bunch which included Werohia, Master Cyklon, The Buzzer, Entail, Boomerang and Catalogue. The Buzzer ran past the leaders at the distance and was clear until the closing stages, when Haut Monde, who' had been unable to get a run, flashed through on the rails and ran him to a neck. Master Cyklon, Lowenberg, Entail, One Whetu, Catalogue, Big Dook, Boomerang and Taitoru were all bunched. The Buzzer stuck on well. Haut Monde was unfortunate that he did not get an opening earlier. Ho and The Buzzer ran on much better than the rest of the field. Alunga Improves Alunga improved to win comfortably in the Lockwood Handicap. Always well placed, he took command from the pacemaker, Gironde, on the turn and ran home well clear. Fossicker finished better than Gironde for second. Old Surrey struck himself and was pulled U PSmoke Screen showed decisive superiority in the Manawatu Sires' Pro-1 duce Stakes. Francis Drake and Rela- ' tive led early from Smoke Screen and The Crooner, with Haughty Winner following. Francis Drake was done with at the half, where Relative and The Croonev led Smoke Screen with Haughty Winner improving his posi-1 tion. Smoke Screen came through on; the inside of Relative into the straight, j but was then challenged and threatened ■ by The Crooner. The Crooner mo- j mentarily looked dangerous, but, shaken up, Smoke Screen drew away over the last furlong. Haughty Winner just beat Relative for third, and Francis Drake was further back. Smoke Screen won with his ears pricked, although his rider was urging him., He is evidently a lazy customer. Neither Francis Drake nor Haughty Winner ran up to their best form.

In the North Island Hack Plate Corroboree made an exhibition of his opponents. Running to the front immediately he outpaced the others from the start and never gave anything a chance. Myrian was always second in running and finished clear of Maestro, Good Sum and Brazen King. The lastnamed, a hot favourite, was beaten all the way. Myriam was very unlucky to strike an improver like Corroboree. Lady Ina and Flarnmarion staged a desperate finish in the Longburn Handicap. Great Hope, Acceptable and Lady Ina were most prominent to the turn from Flarnmarion and the bracketed pair, Hunting Lodge and Severe. Lady Ina was the first to get to the front in the straight with Flarnmarion coming stronglv between her and Great Hope. In a fine finish Lady Ina just beat Flarnmarion. Great Hope slackened a bit at the finish with Hunting More fourth, then Black Thread and Royal Secret. Gasman got left at the post, Flarnmarion was just a bit unlucky. Eara's Good Second* 1 Eara endeavoured an alf-the-way win in the Adderstone Handicap, but The Bigot waited on her to the straight and then wore her down. The pair were clear of the others, who were headed bv Seyfried, Silver River, Cloudy Bay and Roaming. The winner's turn was due. High Star appears to haye benefited by recent racing and went solidly. Toole,v Street was going comfortably while running five furlongs with Miss Appellant in 1.3 1-5, the first two in 26 l-ss. Tooley Street is going on the right way and Miss. Appellant seems to have made some progress lately.
