SUPPLIES TO BRITAIN

MARKED INCREASE SHOWN BEEF AND VEAL POPULAR .DOMINION TOTALS HIGHER There was a marked increase in the amount of meat consumed in Great Britain during the first two months of this year, compared with the same period a year ago. This is shown by the official figures of supplies of meat, compiled by the London Central Markets, which have been received by the New Zealaiid Meat Producers' Board.

Total supplies of all meat to London in January and February amounted to 72,609 tons, an increase of 7084 tons, compared with the same two months in 1936. Beef and veal stocks rose by 3566 tons to 41,295 tons, while mutton and lamb supplies were 2351 tons higher at 22,743 tons. Pork and bacon received amounted to 8571 tons, an increase of 167 tons. New Zealand's beef and veal exports to Britain were 421 tons higher at 2184 tons. Mutton and lamb shipments rose by 450 tons to 7874 tons, while pork and bacon increased by 94 tons to a total of 1104 tons. The largest increases in both beef and veal and mutton and lamb were registered by Australia and Argentina. The following table shows the individual amounts of beef and veal received from the chief contributing countries in the first two months this year, as against the corresponding period last year:— I?ise or i

The progress of the home market, Canada and New Zealand is most marked, but there is a fairly sharp decline in Irish supplies. RUBBER CONSUMPTION RECORD TOTAL LAST YEAR The latest statistical bulletin issued by the International Rubber Committee shows that world consumption for last year reached a record total, amounting to 1.020,788 tons, while against this restricted exports were 866,509 tons. Thus supply showed a 'deficiency of 154,279 tons, compared with consuming demand. This is also further*reflected in the substantial reduction shown in visible world stocks i outside the regulated areas at the end of the year; these, at 420.729 tons, compared with 586,282 tons on December 31, 1935. A London trade report states that it was evidently the knowledge of these figures that influenced the Regulation Committee to announce at a meeting at the end of January an additional release in supplies for the third quarter of the vear of 5 per cent, making the quota for that period 85 per cent of the standard maximum. At the same time, the market was rather surprised that no alteration was made in the quota for 'the first half of the year, at present fixed at 75 per cent for .January-March and SO per cent for April-June. STOCK SALES MORRINSVILLE QUOTATIONS The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Hamilton, report as follows on their Morrinsville stock sale held on Friday:—The yarding, although again including only a small proportion of prime beef cattle, was a heavy one. A full bench of buyers competed freely for supplies up to prices firm on late rates, and showing the recent improving trend. Everything entered was cleared. In the sheep section there were only moderate numbers, but those entered were keenly sought, business being transacted on the basis of former quotations.
