TAKAPUUA BOATING CLUB RACES FOR SMALL CLASSES THREE VESSELS DISMASTED The Ta k a pun a Boating Club held a series of harbour races 011 Saturday afternoon for small classes and also a cruising race to Pine Island for local yachts. A hard north-east wind prcvailed throughout the afternoon and all boats were reefed. In the race for class Z three competitors carried away their masts and one capsized. Owing to the low tide, all events started and finished olf the, western reclamation Avail instead of the clubhouse at Bayswater.

The race for class V brought out seven competitors, but when the last flap: fell, only Limerick, Charniaine. Shamrock and Paroro started to time. The following were late;— Maranui, 4m; Memutu, sm; Leverette, Cm. Limerick drew away from the other boats oil the beat down the harbour to tho Resolution Buoy and was I m >los ahead of Shamrock as she passed the outer starting buoy on the run to the pile beacon, off Birkenhead. She greatly improved her position on the beat back again and won easily. The race started at 2.40 p.m. The finishing times were:—Limerick (scr), 4h '22 m Is; Shamrock (tin), 4h 31m 30s; Paroro (l'/ 2 m), 4h 3sni Is; Charniaine (714 m), oh 4m 12s; Leverette (11m), oh 10m 40s; Maranui (14m), oh 22m 435; Memutu (4m), 5h '2om '2os. The result on corrected times was:—Limerick. 1; Shamrock, '2; Paroro. 3. The start of the race for class S was a poor one. Annette was first away and was closely followed by Sirona and Sceptre. The following were late:—Clio, 2m; Mahana, 6m; Marlene, o'/ 2 m. Annette soon improved her position and led round the course. . After passing Rona Buoy Vamp improved her position, and on the completion of tho first round led Endeavour by 2m 15s. Treasure followed 3m 40s after Endeavour and 30s later came Ayesha. In the second round Vamp completely outsailed tho rest of the fleet, finishing 7m 51s ahead of Endeavour. In this round both Aloha and Joy replaced Treasure and Ayesha. The race started at '2.56 p.m. The finishing times were:—Vamp (scr), 4h 34m 17s; Endeavour (4m), 4h 4'2m 8s; Aloha (9in), 4h 48in 38s; Joy (1.1 m), 4h 55m 245; Treasure (5 ] / 2 ni) 4h 50m 3'2s; Salome (4!/ 2 m); Iron Duke (12m), Ivea (8m), Mirimar (Dm), Zephyr (3%m) and Ayesha (10m) did not finish. The result on corrected times was:—Vamp, 1; Endeavour, 2; Aloha, 3. Eighteen boats faced the starter in the race for class Z, the start being the best of the day. THE CRUISING RACE There were only five competitors in the race to Pine Island and, when the last flag fell, Vagabond crossed the line, closely followed by Konini, Peri, Komuri and Secret. Sheets were eased for the run to their destination, which was reached in good time. The rajce started at 3.15 p.m., and the boats finished in the following order: —Konini, Peri, Komuri, Secret, Vagabond. The result on corrected times was:—Peri, 4m, 1; Secret, 9in, 2; Konini. scr, 3. HOWICK SAILING CLUB CONTEST FOR CLASS M The Howick Sailing Club held a race for class M on Saturday afternoon, starting and finishing off Campbell's Point, Parnell. The race was sailed in a hard breeze from the north-east and during its progress the Maranita capsized near the Resolution Buoy. Tho boat drifted toward tho eastern tide deflector, where the crew was rescued. Prom a poor start Maranita was first away and next to her came Manaia, Manene, Mawhiti, Maroro and Malolo. It was a beat to the White Light Buoy in Rangitoto Channel and Maranita and Manene stood toward tho northern shore. The rest of the boats worked the southern side of the harbour and, when they met in the channel, Manene was a long way in the lead with Maroro in second place. Manene rounded the White Light first and was on her way back again with her spinnaker set when she discovered that she had rounded the mark on the wrong hand. She put about and on her way back to the buoy,- carried away a side stay. Meanwhile Maroro assumed tho lead the order making the turn at White Light Buoy Maroro, Mawhiti, Maranita, Manaia and Manene. The same positions were maintained on the run to the Resolution Buoy, where Maranita capsized. The race started at 3 p.m. The finishing times were:—Maroro (4Vam), 4h 40m 50s; Mawhiti (2Vim), 4h 42m 265; Manaia (2%m), 4h 44m 28s; Manene (scr), 4h 46m 255. Malolo retired. The result on corrected times was: —Maroro, lj Mawhiti, 2; Manaia, 3. HERNE BAY CLUB RACE FOR SMALL BOATS The Heme Bay Sailing Club held two races on Saturday afternoon, one for its 32ft. Silver Fern class and the other for sailing dinghies. The Silver Ferns started and finished off the new Ponsonby Jetty and the dinghies competed over a course in St. Mary's boat harbour. In the race for tho 12-footers Endeavour was first away, closely followed by Silver Fern, Valerie, Flying Cloud and Kandy Kid. Flying Cloud led on the run to the mark off the Richmond Clubhouse, but later was passed by Valerie. Tho race started at 3.20 p.m. The finishing times were:—Valerie (scr), 4h 24m; Flying Cloud (2m), 4h '2sm 50s: Endeavour (4%m),.4h 26m 17s; Kandy Kid (7m). 4h 39m ss. Silver Fern retired. - The result on corrected times was:—Endeavour (L. Foote), 1; FLving Cloud (M. Bartley), 2; Valerie (D. Hurley), 3. The finishing times in tho race for sailing dinghies, which started at 3.20 p.m., were:—Pal (scr), 4h 14s; Joy (2m), 4h 16m 30s; Peggy M. (scr), 4h 17m 365; Aloha (scr), 4h 36m 335. The result on corrected times was:—Pal (K. McLean), 3 ; Joy (G. Russell), 2; Peggy M. (J. Mason), 3. The officials in charge of the racing at Ponsonby were Messrs. A. G. Taylor and A. W. Spaldinir. Messrs. O. Taylor and J. Cooper controlled tho sailing dinghies in the boat harbour. MANUKAU CRUISING CLUB The annual race for committeemen of tho Manukau.Cruising Club was held under ideal conditions during the week-end and was won for tho second year in succession by Mr. J. Keeiran, jun. There were nine starters. Tho handicaps were given at the start, the limit boat, Okere, being despatched at 0.30 a.m., followed by Kia Ora and Foam. Mailo and Wixie M. were sent away togejhor, and, with a short run to the first mark, there was nothing between them when they had ,to gybe. In doing this Wixie M. fouled Mafle, Iter bowsprit penerating Maile's bows, and both yachts retired. The direction of the wind iravo the boats a broad lead to the mark off Waikowhai and a dead beat back against a strong ebb tide, Kia Ora leading Alerte, Foam, Pcrsous and Atalanta. Aloma took a long board across the channel and looked like weathering the others, when her jib blew out and she retired, as also did Okere. Kia Ora still maintained tho lead on the second round with Atalanta catching up. On the beat back to the finishing line Alerte and Atalanta weathered Kia Ora and Foam, who were having a great tussle, but Foam broke tacks and went into the Mangere shore.
