PERIL FROM THE AIR
GOVERNMENT OFFICES / ' . v SCHEME DANGERS [from a special correspondent] LONDON, March 6 Whitehall, headquarters of the Government, may not be rebuilt after all—• it may be moved into the country. The Government is being urged to house the Ministries of Air, Labour, Trade and Transport in an area outside London. Already, however, preliminary ■work has started on the £2,250,000 . scheme ~,to house those departments in one block of offices 550 ft. long and wide. • More than 5400 civil servants were to have been under one roof. But air and military authorities are unanimous in condemning Whitehall as it now exists on the ground that it is a first-class target for enemy aircraft in time of war. All Ministerial offices are justifiable air targets, and the risk of their destruction, thereby creating irreparable loss and confusion, should be avoided.
