BETTING IN HOTEL
BOOKMAKER FINED MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT For carrying on business as a bookmaker in a hotel on March 17, William Heskoth was fined £25, in default one month's imprisonment, when he appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in tho Police Court yesterday. "These men are a nuisance, especially when they frequent hotels while men's hotter judgment is impaired," said the magistrate. "By carrying on business as bookmakers they prey on the savings and Konietimes the sustenance of men who cannot afford to bet." Detective-Sergeant McHugh said a constable visited the private bar of the hotel and saw a man carrying on an extensive betting business in the public bar. Accused was assisting him by receiving the betting slips as the bets were made. The bookmaker was later arrested on warrant, and Hesketh then frankly admitted that ho had boon receiving bets. Mr. A. Hall Skolton said accused had been out of work, and a man came to him and offered him the job for a f<rw days.
