TOTAL OF 824 IN BRITAIN 85,000 INCOMES OF £2OOO Thero were 824 millionaires, or persons with incomes exceeding £30,000, in Great Britain and Ireland last year, compared with 775 the year before, an increase of 49. There were 50,449 persons with incomes of £2OOO and upward, an increase of 2030. The aggregate income of all such persons was £424,339,484, an increase of £17,175,138. These figures are revealed by the surtax assessments given in the'report of the Commissioners of Inland Revenue for tho year ended March 31, and are based on 1934-35 incomes. The total number of persons assessed to sur-tax with incomes ranging from £75,000 to £IOO.OOO was 60, compared with 50 the year before. There were 69 with incomes exceeding £IOO,OOO, compared with 64 the year before. The incomes of tho latter class aggregated £11,485,300, compared with £10.878.605.

The number of persons who were charged with income-tax in the year ended March, 1936, was 3.350.000, compared with 3,500,000 in the previous 12 months. There were, in addition, 4,750,000 persons who wore entirely re* lieved from the tax by tho operation of allowances, an increase of 250.000.
