BIRDS ON KAPITI
SIGNS OF AN INCREASE The statement that although the weather on Kapiti Island had been wet and sometimes rough no gales had been experienced to upset the nesting was made in a letter.to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society by the curator of the island, Mr. A. S. Wilkinson. The island had had a splendid season, and copious rains had kept the plant life moving all the time, said Mr. Wilkinson. He had never seen so many parakeets on the island before. Kakas and pigeons were also plentiful this year, and so were the honey-eaters. Ducks had bred well, at least half a dozen broods of grey ducklings having been seen close to Rangatira, and at the north end three broods of paradise were seen. Sea birds had had one of the best seasons for the past ten years.
