PHYSICAL EDUCATION
TRAINING OF TEACHERS SPECIAL SCHOOL ADVOCATED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN. Monday The establishment of a national college in association with the Medical School in Dunedin for the training of schoolteachers in physical education is being urged by Dr. C. E. Hercus, Dean of tho Medical Faculty. Physical education was not a sport such as cricket or football, which did not give what was aimed at —a welldeveloped and balanced body—said Dr. Hercus in an address, Foremost was the development of character, both mental and moral. Physical training was probably the biggest defect in the schools of New Zealand at the present time, and there was no specialisation or special attention directed to this important aspect of education. "I think tho deficiency is in the training of the teachers, and this can onlv be remedied by the establishment of a school of physical education in Otaeo." said Dr. Hercus.
