STOCK EXCHANGES

BUSINESS RESUMES TO-DAY MARKET PROSPECTS POSITION OF METAL SHARES Business on the New Zealand Stock ' Exchanges, which have been closed since March 25 for the Easter vacation, will be resumed this morning. At the close there was a healthy tone in the market although, as usual, easiness developed.over the last few days. Such a condition, however, is normal as there is always a reduction in the volume of funds available for investment prior to a holiday, while in times of rapid change such as exist at present investors hesitate to make lprge commitments which must stand over a period when the market is closed to them. In the past 10 days there have been few happenings which can have seriously affected the general tone. Company announcements have been of limited extent. Some dividends have appeared and details of a few balancesheets have been published, mainly of Australian concerns. In this respect one of the principal announcements was an increased dividend by the E., S. and A. Bank. Although this was made on March 25 it came too late to be announced on the Exchange that day. Tho fact that this bank is now paying its dividend British income tax must now bo taken into account in calculating the yield. Metals Lose Strength One of the chief features over the holiday is the loss of some of the strength of the base metals market. Thursday's "spot quotations a ton and those on March 25 compare as follows: — April 1 March 25 £sd £ s A Copper .. ... 71 11 8 73 S 9 Lead .. .. 80 12 6 31 15 0 Spelter ..... 32 6 3 33 11 3 . . Tin .■ .. .. 290 2 6 302 .10 0 Labour troubles in heavy industries in the United States have been one of the principal influences in the decline and while the curtailment of the de--inand from that quarter may be serious at the moment it is felt that the effects will be only of a temporary nature. While competent judges of the market consider that tin may be in a vulnerable position the opinion is held that copper, lead and spelter may fall from their present levels and still be very profitable to producers. Closing Quotations Closing quotations for investment fctocks on the Auckland Stock Exchange on March 25 were:—

BRITISH WAR LOAN British Wireless ' RUGBY, April 2 War loan, 3* per cent, was quoted to-day at £lo2* 13s 9d, compared with ~£lO2 10s yesterday.
