POLYNESIAN DIOCESE
PLANS FOR' CATHEDRAL BISHOP KEMPTHORNE'S VISIT The progress of Church of England work in the Polynesian" Islands and plans for the erection of a cathedral were outlined last evening by the Rt. Rev. L. S. Kempthorne, Bishop in Polynesia, who arrived in Auckland by the Aorangi to attend General Synod, which opens in Hamilton on Wednesday. Bishop Kempthorne said that the work for the erection of a cathedral was commenced by Bishop T'xitcheU in 1919 and, although no particular appeal had been made, money had since accumulated. A pro-cathedral was at present established in Suva, and it was hoped to advance the plans for the erection of a cathedral within three years. A good deal of work was being per* formed in Samoa, the Bishop explained, and a new school for the education of Indian children was being erected. A New Zealand priest, the Rev. H. Irving, who was ordained in February, was engaged on Melanesian work, a large proportion of which was centred in the children of Melanesian immigrants who had lost connection with their original home. Bishop Kempthorne is returning to his diocese at the conclusion of Genera Svnod.
