M.C.C. TEAM

PINAL MATCH WON SEVEN WICKETS MARGIN FAILURE OF THE BATSMEN TWO UNUSUAL INCIDENTS The match between M.C.C. arid the combined Auckland-Wellington team "was concluded at Eden Park on Saturday and resulted in a win for the visitors by seven wjekets. the conclusion of the second day's play the Combined team in its second innings had scored? 22 runs for the loss of two wickets. In its first innings the Combined team compiled IS3 and M.C.C. replied with 205. When play was resumed on Saturday the majority of the Combined players failed dismally. Postles added another 12 runs to his overnight score when he was run out through a brilliant return from the outfield by Hardstaff. ° With the dismissal of Sale for 15 the bowlers were well in command. Blandford, the Wellington representative, who was unbeaten with 28, played a good innings. He scored well with strong shots on the leg side and three fours were included in his total. He batted for 62 minutes. Bright Partnership Nine wickets had fallen for 87 when Matheson joined Blandford and the pair added 36 runs in the brightest partnership 'of the innings. Matheson was placed last in the batting list owing to an injured finger, which he received on the previous day in attempting to accept a chance off his own bowling. He lost his wicket in hitting out. His score of 17 included three fours. . There were two unusual incidents near.the end of the Combined team's innings. Blandford, in attempting to hit .Verity co leg, missed and appeared to be bowled when the bails fell off. Several of the Englishmen started toward the pavilion under the impression that the innings had closed. The umpire at the bowler's end, being unsighted, appealed to the other umpiro, who decided in favour of the batsman.

Soon afterwards Matheson played forward to Verity, missed, and the Englishman appealed when Duckworth quickly removed the bails. The umpire disallowed , the appeal for stumped, which both Duckworth and Verity seemed to resent. Verity did not retire in.delivering the next ball, but stood at the bowling crease and sent down a* full toss, which Matheson promptly square-cut to the boundary. Verity appeared reluctant to continue bowling, but Allen was seen to .motion him back with his hand. The attitude of the bowler in not accepting the decision of , the umpire was hard to understand. ' v Verity's Five Wickets Verity again bowled splendidly, tak- , ing five wickets for 42 runs. He spun the ball appreciably and flighted cleverly, while his faster ball proved very troublesome. Verity bowled 18.5 overs, eight of which were maidens. Sims,' two for 20 in 12 overs, five maidens, also bowled well. The batsmen covdd do little with Jiim. Requiring 102 runs to win M.C.C. opened with Wyatt and Worthington. The batsmen took no risks and after a slow period Wyatt at 13 was completely beaten by a fast delivery from Simpson. Hardstaff gave an early chance and then threw his wicket away. Worthington, 27, frequently mis-timed his shots and eventually fell to a brilliant running catch by Postles. Levi and, 38 not out, gave a sample of his, best batting form. He scored all round the wicket with nicely-timed shots and his driving was exceptionally powerful. The Auckland bowling was again steady, Simpson, McCoy and Bush taking one, wicket each. After the necessary runs.for a win had been scored at 3.40 p.m. the Englishmen carried on to 4 p.m., and playing holiday cricket, lost five lfiore wickets. Weather conditions were ideal and there was a large attendance. The gate takines for the three davs amounted to £7BO.
