HISTORY OF VOLCANO
INSPECTION OF RANG ITOTO NOTED GEOLOGIST'S VISIT An inspection of Rangitoto was made on Friday by the noted voleanologist, I)r. A. L. Day, director of the Geophysical Laboratory at the Carnegie Institution. Washington, who returned to the United States by the Mariposa oh Saturday evening. He has carried out research in the Dominion during the past few months in cooperation with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The inspection was made at the invitation of the Mayor. Mr. Ernest Davis, who accompanied Dr. Da v. Others who visited the island' included the Mayor of Devonport and chairman of the Rangitoto Island Domain Board. Mr. H. F. \\. Meikle, and Professor J. A. Bartrum, professor of geology at the Auckland University College. Dr. Day gave an account of the formation of the island, which, he said, more completely demonstrated the historv of a volcano than any other he had seen. The liquid rock which cooled down 'into Rangitoto was known as basalt and flowed more easily than the rhvolite found at Rotorua.
