VIRGINIAN DEER

STEWART ISLAND HERD At Port Adventure, Stewart Island, where the old settlement was, there are some 60 acres of splendid cocksfoot crass, and this has been made tbo happy hunting ground for \ irginian deer. In the evening they can be seen in twos and threes dotted about the pasture, and fishermen who anchor in the harbour at night get plenty of venison for their larder. An unusual inhabitant also is an old white hen left there some nine years ago by a prospective settlor. Last week, two fishermen decided to catch it. but, to their surprise, 'as soon as the bird seemed cornered, it rose and flew off like a wood pigeon. Several nests of this lonely fowl were seen with from 13 to 15 eggs in, but, of course, infertile.
