LYCEUM LITERARY CIRCLE

A meeting of the Lyceum Club Literary Circle was presided over by Mrs. Archibald Buchanan, convener. The circle's usual after-holiday book review evening was held. Mrs. Alice Weston ■wrote charmingly of Galsworthy's "Apple Tree"; Buchanan selected Ereya Stark's "Southern Gates of Arabia," in which the author gave a woman's picturisation of this littleknown part of the world, where she found "God Save the King" being sung enthusiastically upon special occasion"—although "without territorial significance." Travelling quite alone this intrepid explorer has probed into every aspect of life in Southern Arabia, revealing some unexpected international significances. Miss Parker took a biography of the first years of the life of 'William, Prince of Orange, dealing with his extraordinary accomplishments in his own land before coming to England. Mrs. de Trafford mentioned the new biography of "Zaharoff," Miss Hamilton reviewed "Seven," by Horn Landau, the Polish writer, Mrs. Brittain Bull spoke of Don Byrne, and Miss N. Martin reviewed some bird poems by Eileen Duggan. The Kipling memorial card, displaying a fine etching of the Poets' Corner in "Westminster, was .received, and also copies of the Kipling Journal.
