SYDNEY CUP

RACE FOR STAYERS

SOME NOTABLE WINNERS

SEVENTY-SI-XOND CONTEST

BY PUAKTON The Sydney Cup is included with the old-time events of the Australian turf. As it is known to-day, the Sydney Cup was founded in 1860 by the Australian Jockey Club, and this year's race on Master .Monday will mark the seventysecond in its history. Ihe stake is COOOO and a trophy of the value oi I'2oo is added A survey of the list of winners shows that the same js embellished with the names of the following illustrious horses who scored under heavy imposts: —The Harh, 10.8; Darehin, 9.8; Carbine, {>.o and 9.8; .Highborn, 9.3; Wakeful, ft.7; Cadonia, 9.1; Kennaquhair, 9.5; Kurythinic, 9.8; David, 9.7; and liilypond, 9.8. The record of three-year-olds in important handicap events always commands interest and the Sydney Cup victories of Carbine and liis son Wallace were specially meritorious. Carbine's success under 9.0 was very brilliant, for at one stage he was knocked right bark and his prospects were seriously affected. Following is the list of three-year-old winners:—lß(s7, Fishook, (3.10; 1872, The Prophet,, 6.10; 1874, Speculation, 0.2; 18S0. l'etrca, 7.12; 1881, Progress, 8.2; 1882, Cunnamulla, 6.0; 1887, Frisco, 6.1; 1888, Tlio Australian IVer, 8.6; 1889, Carbine, 9.0; 1892, Stroinboli, 8.0; 1895, Patroness, 7.0; 1896, Wallace, 8.12; 1899, Diffidence, 0.8; 1901, San Fran, 0.12; 1904, Lord Cardigan, 8.7; 1909, Trafalgar, 7.4; 1911, Moorilla, 7.1; 1928, Winalot, 8.2; 1932j Johnnie Jason, 8.4.

Good Record of Mares

Marfs have a good record in connection with the Sydney Cup, 15 victories being down to their credit, the list of winners being as follows: —Barbelle, •Jyrs., 7.10; Mermaid, 4yrs., 7.5; Vixen. 4yrs., 7.2; Petrca, 3yrs., 7.12; Cerise and Blue, 'Jyrs., 8.2; Lady Trenton, •Jyrs., 7.7; Patroness, 3vrs.. 7.0; Diffidence, 3vrs., 6.8; La Carabine, syrs., 8.2; Wakeful, syrs., 'J.7; Xordeen, Jyrs. 6.7; Moorilla, ovrs., 7.1; Scarlet, 1 yrs , 7.6; Gxvillian G., 6vrs., 7.0; Akuna, Oyrs., 7.0. Gwillian G's time. 3.22'.. is the fastest for the race.

The victory registered by Murray King in the Sydney Cup of 1926 is ranged up with the most sensational incidents bound up in the history of the Pa ndwick race. The horse had raced so disappointingly that his owner bad definitely decided to issue instructions for his withdrawal. George Price, who was responsible for his training, paid a visit to the owner, who was a patient in a private hospital, and the appeal he submitted for the horse to be given an opportunity to reinstate himself was successful, and a strong ring of joy came to the Sydney trainer when Murray King led the field home. The records show that Murray Kina started at 200 to 1.

'I he following is a record of the placed performances of New Zealandbred horses in the Sydney Cup:— 1889 —Carbine, 3yrs., 0.0 .. .. "Won IS90—Carbine, 'lyrs., 9.9. . .. AVon 1919 —Arch Marella, (jyrs., 8.12 .. Third l!)2l—Arch Marella, Syrs., 8.0 . . Second 192(5—Naos, ■lyrs., 6.7 .. . . Third l ."(27—Limerick, Syrs., 8 4 .. Second 1032—-'.Admiral Drake. Oyrs., 8.9.. Second (Yeilmond, lyrs., 9.11 .. Third 1931 —Li march, 3yrs., 8.3 .. Third 1030 —-Egmont, Syrs., 7.2 . . . . Second With Cuddle and Golden Promise ticked off as doubtful starters, it would seem probable that Lough Neagh will head the list of contestants for this year's Sydney Cup. The son of Bachelor's Persse, who is now in his eighth year, has had a strenuous career and it can be said that he has stood up to the test in a manner pointing to his being endowed with all the qualifies looked for in a real thoroughbred. At three years old lie showed that he could stay, and at later stages he won two weight-for-age races, run over two miles, in fast time, and last year he carried 9.3 to victory in the Brisbane Cup, decided over a similar distance. With 9.0 in the Sydney Cup he has an impost lib. below weight-for-age. and. with two recent successes to his credit, there is good reason to anticipate that he Mill play a prominent part in the contest. Interest in Wotan

The four-vear-old Wotan (8.12) is fbe one in whose prospects most New Zealand interest will be centred and the sensational character of his'victory in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington last November marked him out so clearly as a true stayer that no grounds exist for any doubt on that important matter. With 8.12 he is called upon to carry an impost 151b. in excess of that under which he won the Melbourne Cup, but it is still 21b. under weight-for-age. All being well with Wotan, he should be capable of playing a strong part when the finish comes to be fought out. Silver Standard. who fdled second place in the Metropolitan Handicap (7.4), Catilfield Cup (7.10) and Melbourne Cup (7.8), figures in the Sydney Cup with 8.5, which means that he will meet Wotan. who beat him by a neck in the Melbourne Cup. on 41b. better terms.

A.J.C. ST. LEGER SMALL FIELD PREDICTED When the withdrawal of Talking from the A.J.C. St. Leger took place, it was at first thought that with the dual Derby winner out of the way such might be expected to lead to a stronger field numerically, but no sanguine views are now expressed on the matter. However, it is stated that Gold Rod may be given the opportunity of winning classic honours and that Peerage and Prince Quex, who fought out a close finish for honours in the V.R.C. St. Leger, may contest the classic. Brazilian, the half-brother, by Brazen, to the doughty Peter Pan, was engaged. but an unfortunate accident that hefel him some weeks back has necessitated a long rest for him.

RICH TWO-YEAR-OLD RACE SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES The A.J .C. Sires' Produce Stakes, to be run at Pandvvick next Saturday, stands out prominently as the moii valuable juvenile event in this quarter of the globe. The added money is £3f)oo and subscriptions by owners of sires nominated, together with a sweepstakes, add further to the stakes for the winner. "When the Victoria Racing Club's meeting opened at Flemington last month Ajax, by Heroic —Menderiham, was the popular fancy to win the leading position among the juvenile brigade, but ho disappointed. Hun, by Heroic —Gladioli, scored in the V.11.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, but Caesar, by Silvius —Wingecarribee, ran him to half a head and in the Ascot Yale Stakes won leading honours. By all accounts, Caesar is likely to prove the best two-year-old of the season. The race luus been won three times by New Zealand-bred horses, namely, Honour, by Limond, in 1929; Amnion Ra, by Limond, in 11)31; and (Hold Rod, by Chief Ruler, in 1936. Lynch Law. bv Limond—Drastic, who had scored three successive victories and was estimated above the ordinary, seemed likely to play a strong part in this year s race, but unfortunately a leg ailment necessitated his being thrown out oi training last month and ho will be missing.
