IMPROVED RATE COLLgCTION HARBOUR BRIDGE SUPPORTED An increased rate collection was reported at the Manurewa Town Board meeting on Monday night. The clerk, Mr. H. Kay, stated that of the £5912 rates struck there hail been collected £3788, representing 73 per cent of the total, and outstanding rates amounting to £K3(>7 had also been paid. The increase in current payments was substantial, last year's percentage being (55. Rates amounting to £282 had been struck during the year in respect of State houses, but so far no payments had been made. It was anticipated that after the end of the financial year the department would pay the percentage promised on rents collected. Members expressed satisfaction with the statement. In response to a request from tlie Birkenhead Borough Council it was decided to support the construction of a harbour bridge as a national undertaking and to support a deputation on the subject to the Auckland Cit\ Council. „ ~7 , The engineer, Mr. R. 1. Y\orley. reported that all arrangements had boon completed for an immediate start with the installation of the district water supplv, when the statutory period under the board's special order expired, it, was hoped to have the scheme completed and water supplied before the end of the vear. The board decided to call for applications for the new position of turncock which would be created.
