OBITUARY

MRS. JAMES CROSS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PAPAROA, Thursday Tho death hns occurred of Mrs. Cross, wife of Mr. James Cross, an old settler of Wairere, Paparoa, aged 70. Born in England, Mrs. Cross came to the Dominion with her parents in 1878. Tho family settled at Kaikoura, but in tho early eighties they removed to Paparoa.' Mrs. Cross was married in 1887. She is survived by her husband, one daughter and four sons.

REV. GEORGE HENRY WEST Regarded as a very fine type of mission worker, tho Rev. George Henry West, of Dunedin, who was lost at sea between the Reef Islands and Utupua Island near tho Santa Cruz group' of tho Solomon Islands on January 19, joined tho Melancsian Mission as a layman in 1913. Ho studied at St. John's College, Auckland, from 1921 to 1922, and was subsequently ordained to tho priesthood by the then Bishop of Melanesia, the Rt. Rev. J. M. Steward, who appointed him as priest in charge of the Reef Islands. Mr. West was the sole worker in the Reef group, and was out touch with civilisation for many months of the year. Ho made several perilous voyages through the group in his whalcboat. Mr. West was a generous benefactor of the Otago University Museum, contributing a great deal of valuable material from the Santa Cruz and Reef Islands. He was a brother of Mrs. Hamblett, wife of the Rev. W. A. Hamblett, vicnr of St. Matthew's Church, Dunedin.
