KAURI TIMBER TRADE GAS LAMPS IN PARNELL Several small paragraphs appearing in the New Zealand Hkrai.d of starch 8, ISS7, are of interest in comparison with present clay conditions and affairs. In connection with the Parnell Borough, 0110 paragraph reads: —'"It was decided to call for tenders for new gas lamps. This iesolution arose out of a letter received from the manager of the gas works, asking the borough to send six lamps to the gas works to replace those belonging to the council. ,which were past repair." A peculiar experience is reported m the overseas news. The item reads:— "During the voyage of the. American ship Frank Pendleton from New Vork to Melbourne last month, thousands or insects, with fins two inches in length, were met with. Two were dipped up a bucket, and Captain Nichols says that he has never seen anything of the kind before." The introduction of kauri timber into the London market was discussed in a letter from a London firm, 1 reads: —"Some iarge parcels of logs ant planks have been sent forward with th object . of introducing this wood into more general use here, to encourag which it has jheen offered at lower prices; its special characteristics o excellent sizes, • straightness, cleanness of growth should demand large trade, but at present it is selling very slowly."
