PORT OF LYTTELTON

PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS CONSIDERATION BY BOARD Extensivo improvements and additions to the port facilities at Lyttelton are under consideration by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The acting-har-bourmaster. Captain J. Plowman, has recommended the purchase of a new tug, tho deepening of the harbour outside the moles to give more swinging room for large vessels, and the improvement of the guiding lights in the main channel. Tho hoard, at its last meeting, referred the harbourmaster's report to the harbour improvement committee.

"Occasions arise when we could do with two tugs," Captain Plowman stated. "I would therefore recommend the board to purchase a now tug with more power than the present one, and to keep the Lyttelton as a stand-by for use when the other vessel is under overhaul and whenever tho two tugs are required."

WANGANUI HARBOUR ENGINKER TO MAKE REPORT The Wanganui Harbour Board has decided to recominission the dredge Kaione for the purpose of improving the depth of water at the harbour entrance. The Kaione. which has been lying idle at the Mculi Wharf, Castlecliff. for tho past four years, will leave Wanganui this week and proceed to Wellington, where she will go on to the Patent Slip at Evans Bay for painting and survey. On her return to Wanganui the Kaione will be put to work on the bar and in the channel between the moles. Mr. G. A. Lee, a marine civil engineer with a great deal of harbour experience, is at present visiting Wanganui and is conferring with the board in regard to harbour improvements generally.
