METAL SHARES RISE GENERAL "TONE HEALTHY (Received March 5, 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 5 A healthy tone characterised business on tho Sydney Stock Exchange to-dny. Front-line industrials made headway, while Barriers and other shares dependent on metals showed gains. Sales included: —

G. J COLES, LIMITED INTERIM DIVIDEND LOWER PAYMENT OF 9D A SHARE The directors of G. J. Coles, Limited, Melbourne, retailers, have announced a dividend of 9d a share, or 3J per cent, for the quarterly period ended March 31. It is payablo on April 15. This compares with a payment of 2i per cent in the same quarter last year. This distribution has come as a surprise to the market, as the rato was raised from 2i jjer cent in the final quarter last year to 5 per cent in the first quarter of the current financial year. It was generally expected that 20 per cent would bo paid for the current year. Prices roso from £4 2s to .a peak of £5 14s 6d. Reports from Australia state that buying support from New Zealand has been an important factor in lifting the market. ! Evidence of the disappointment of | shareholders is given by tho fact that | levels dropped sharply on tho Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, when a sale was made 7s lower at £5 2s, at which price more were offered. GUARANTEE CORPORATION UNCHANGED INTERIM DIVIDEND The directors of the New Zealand Guarantee Corporation, Limited, Wellington, have declared an interim dividend of lid a share for tbo half-year ended February 29. GOLD AND SILVER QUOTATIONS IN LONDON LONDON, March 4 Fine gold is quoted to-day at £7 2s 4d an oz., compared with £7 2s 2sd yesterday. Silver is quoted at 20jd an oz. spot, and 21d forward, compared with 20 7-16 d and 20 id yesterday. The quotation for silver at per fine oz. is 22 13-16 d, compared with 22 1-1 Gd yesterday.
