Iron handkerchiefs when they are quite damp and they will have just enough stiffness to prevent them soiling so quickly. Stains on windows and mirrors can be removed with very little trouble if they are damped with a cloth dipped in spirits of camphor. Leave this on for a few minutes and then rub with a dry cloth, when no trace will be left. New bread can be cut into the thinnest of slices if you dip the knife into boiling water first. Mother-of-pearl articles that have lost their original sheen can be made like new by rubbing them with olive oil, wiping clean and then polishing with a silk rag moistened with methylated spirit.
