CAPE RUNAWAY ROAD HOURS OF OFFICE STAFF [by TELEGRAPH OWN COItIIESrONI^NT] OPOTIKI, Friday At to-day's meeting of the Opotiki County Council the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. It. Semple, wrote concerning the request to make the Cape Runaway Road a State highway. The council decided to discuss the matter with the Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone, when he visited Opotiki this month. A request that the council office staff should work a five-day week was received from a union of workers. The clerk pointed out that a larger staff would be necessary, and the council decided to make no alteration. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. \\. E. Parry, informed thm council that the rebate of 12J per cent on rates would not be continued and no rebate would he paid this year. Mr. Hultquist, member for the Bay of Plenty, wrote on the question of amalgamation of counties in the Bay of Plenty electorate. A discussion ensued and members spoke against amalgamation. The district engineer wrote stating the work that would be necessary preparatory to thy building of reinforced concrete bridges on the Opotiki-Te Araroa main highway in order that the amounts required might be placed on the Public Works Estimates.
