POPULATION INCREASE
: SOUTH LAGS BEHIND t " In the last 10 years the population of the North Island has increased by . 107,129, and the South Island by only 40.217," said Mr. H. Holland at a meeting of the Canterbury Progress League. He said that in the South Island the population increase was the smallest recorded for a similar period since 1840. This was one subject which, he thought, could well be discussed at a combined conference of progress leagues in the South Island. Mr. P. R. Climie, the secretary of the league, said the leagues had been circularised, and only one had been definitely in favour of holding the conference. As there seemed very little to be discussed, it. was decided not to hold a conference, at least in the early part of this year.
