oBROADSIDINGr EVENTS' ELIMINATION DECIDED SUCCESS OF H. MANGHAM All the thrills associated with the cinder track were enjoyed last night at the Western Springs Stadium by a crowd of about 7000 spectators. The test elimination match resulted in the victory of Mangham in the final and this success qualified him to race against Putt Mossman in a special match race. An injury to Mossman's left hand suffered in an attempt to ride over a ramp erected above a midget car, while the car was in motion, prevented him from competing in the final of the match race, although he had already raced in two heats. Tho Auckland team to race an American team was selected last night as follows, as a result of the riding done in tho elimination races (Tasman Stakes): —A. Mattson (captain), F. Day, S. Rhodes (Christcliurch), H. Tolley (Wellington), B. Smith and C. Casey. L. Entwhistle and L. Perry are emergencies. They will compete against an American team which consists of: —P. Mossman (captain), P. W. Mossman, J. Deihl, R. Grant, L. Wilson and B. Hill. J. McLeod and C. Buchanan are emergencies. The three riders in the latter team who are not ' yet hero are to arrive by the Niagara on Monday. Mossman will make his final appearance in New Zealand on Monday evening, when the official test match between the New Zealand and American riders will be held. Details of the races are as follows: — TASMAN STAKES. Four laps, rolling start H. Mangham .. .. .. 1 P. Day 2 First Heat.—S. Rhodes gave a good exhibition of cinder-track riding to win comfortably from N. Warry, and L. Perry, lime, lm 20 3-ss. „ , Second Heat.—B. Smith won well from J. Corrnack and P. Phillips (Wellington). Time, lm 265. Third Heat.—H. Mangham, who rode very well throughout the evening, won in good style from F. Day and C. Buchanan, lnne, lm 255. Fourth Heat. —This saw a fine race between H. Tolley and C. Morgan, the former winning, with L. Entwhistle third. Time, lm First' Semi-final. —S. Rhodes led throughout and won by half a lap from J. Cormack, who was the only other one to finish. Time, Second Semi-final.—ln this event H. Mangham led throughout and won by 40 yards from P. Day. the other two starters having dropped out in the second lap with engine trouble. Time, lm 23 1-os. Final. —Forty yards separted H. Mangham from F. Day at the finish, and J. Cormack was nearly half a lap further back. S. Rhodes dropped out in the third lap. Time, lm 21 3-ss. SPECIAL MATCH RACE, Three laps, standing start First Heat. —At the end of the second lap Mangham, who competed against Putt Mussman as a result of the former's victory in the Tasman Stakes, was separated from Mossman by a wheel, but the latter was aoout six yards ahead at the finish. Time, 02 'J-r>s. Second Heat. —H. Mangham, who drew the inner position, led all the way and won by about 3 0 yards. Time, 03s. Final.—x\s a result of an injury to Mossman, S. Rhodes took his place in the final, and the result was a comfortable victory for Mangham by about 20 yards in the slowest time of tho three races. Time, 65 2-os.
