NURSES' HOURS AND SALARIES

Sir. —Permit me spare to say that the time is overdue for an improvement in length of hours worked by nurses in training institutions. The present state of uHairs calls for prompt attention by those who administer our public hospitals. The periods of duty arc arduous and too broken to aflord nurses sufficient time for social duties as a relaxation. There have been too many excuses offered for present conditions, which are to-dav unacceptable. Over-fatigue is a most dangerous state in which to nurse an infectious case. It is difficult to understand why the Now Zealand .Registered Nurses' Association has not taken up the matter of the welfare of its members. If an immediate improvement is really impossible salaries should be increased to help the nurses cope with the higher cost of living brought about by increased wages in many walks of life.
