FOUR OCCUPANTS ESCAP# W * ALL SWIM TO SAFETY 1 [by telegraph —OTX correspondent] ,NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday A remarkable escape from serious injuries and drowning was experienced by a party of motorists near Mokau this morning. A motor-car containing four persons left the road and plunged into the Mohakatino River, where it was completely submerged. The car was driven by Mrs. I). Milne, of Hawera, who was accompanied by her husband, Mr. I. R. Milne, Mrs. Matthews, of Fitzroy, and Mr. Bernard Matthews. As it passed a cream lcrry it ran off the road and somersaulted down a steep bank into about ten ieet of water.

Mr. Milne, who received head injuries, and Mrs. Matthews, escaped by the left-hand door into deep water and swam ashore, Mrs. Milne and Mr. Matthews escaped by the other door and also reached the bank. Mrs. Milne was badly cut by flvlng glass and a wound m the left arm necessitated fourteen stitches. She taken to the New Plymouth Hospital. Jt was some hours later, at high tide, before the car was recovered.

He was taken to the Thames Hospital for treatment. The accident occurred when Hughes was returning from lii» work at Neavesville.
