Hops as Manure
After hops are finished with in breweries they may be of some use iu the, garden. Heinforeed by the addition of artificial fertilisers they aro sold as hop manures. In the crudest form, spent hops consist of a wet, sour mass that should bo spread out on the laud lor a lew weeks in order to sweeten under the influence of sun and air. When the material has to be transported for some distance it becomes dried to some extent, but often the spent hops are lumpy and damp. In their best state they are dry and flaky like leaimould; this is the best form in which to use the hops on the garden. The material being of a vegetable nature adds humus to the soil. They do not decay very quickly, hence it is usual to apply them early in the year. Apart from farm manure there is no better mulch for the summer months.
