SHOPLIFTING CHARGES

THEFTS FROM THREE STORES ELDERLY MAN IMPRISONED Goods of a total value of £4 4s Bd, stolen ' from three department stores in the city, between October 31 last and January 8, were involved in five charges of theft admitted by a sustenance recipient, William Jackson, aged 62, when he appeared Mr. 0. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court j-esterday. "Accused is addicted to drink," said Detective-Sergeant McHugh, "and he was in the habit of taking goods from department stores, panning and selling elsewhere whatever he could, after which he spent the money on liquor. He was detected taking a jack plane from a counter on January 8, and when interviewed by the police frankly admitted all the thefts. Accused has quite a long list of previous convictions." Sentencing accused to two months' imprisonment, the magistrate said such men could not be allowed to go wandering about, and it was for the protection of the firms he had been robbing that he would go to gaol.
