WIDESPREAD RAINFALL SOME FLOODING EXPECTED The weather report and forecast for Nmv Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —A northern cyclone has become more intense and extensive and is now centred east of Cape Maria van Diemen. A slight anti-cyclone is located east of the South Island. Indications are for easterly winds, later changing to southerlies north of New Plymouth and Napier, and southeasterlies thence southward to Farewell Spit and Kaikoura; strong to gale and reaching strong gale force in places Variable winds south of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, but north-easterlies to south-easterlies predominating; moderate mainly, but increasing on parts of the east coast. Seas rough to high north of Farewell Spit and Kaikouraelsewhere moderate but rising south of Kaikoura. In the eastern Tasman Sea southerly winds, gales and high seas in the northern and central portions; moderate to. fresh with moderate to rather rough seas'in the southern portion. Weather thick and stormy from Nelson and Marlborough northward with widespread rain. Many heavy f a ll' 3 and considerable flooding likelv, more especially in northern, central and eastern districts of the North Island. Rain extending also to eastern areas of the South Island, but the weather mainly fair in the west and far south.

SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST THICK AND STOIJMY WEATHER The Government meteorologist issued to the Hkrat.i> last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province:—Strong easterly winds to gale and, in places, strong gale force, changing later to southerlies. Weather thick and stormy, with heavy rain and considerable flooding likely. Seas rough to high. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland.—The south-easterlv gale, which commenced in Auckland on Thursday night, continued yesterday morning. The wind backed to the northeast about mid-day and hoavv rain squalls persisted. There were Several showers during the afternoon, and steady rain fell in the evening. The wind moderated late last night. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 71 degrees. The barometer was steady throughout the day. Barometer, midnight, steady ... 28.50 in. Midnight, Thursday . ~ 29.56 in.

Wellington.—The weather was dull and threatening all day. There was a slight trace of rain before 9 a.m., and rain set in steadily later. In the afternoon a moderate to fresh south wind prevailed. The minimum temperature on Thursday night was 52.1 degrees and the maximum yesterday was 63.0 degrees.

' Christchurch.—The weather was fine but rather cloudy, with a moderate north-east breeze in die morning and a fresh east-north-east breeze in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 62.4 degrees. The barometer, after falling, was steady last night at 30.02 in .: Dunedin.—There was again a fresh north-easterly breeze yesterday, but sun shone brightly and conditions generally were pleasant. The maximiim 1 temperature was 71 degrees. The barometer fell from 30.06 in. to /29.95 m.
