CRICKET TEST

ENDING IN SIGHT TASK FOR ENGLAND SECOND INNINGS SCORE SIX WICKETS FOB 236 By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received January 0, O.fiO p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 0 Fine weather favoured the fifth day's play in the third cricket, test, between England and Australia. Continuing its second innings, Australia was dismissed just prior to the luncheon adjournment for 561, 6-1 runs being added to the overnight score. Australia made 200 for nine wickets, declared, in its first innings, and England compiled 76 for nine wickets, declared, in reply. England, which required 639 runs for victory, had lost six wickets for 236 runs at stumps. Bradman, 218 not out, and McCabe, 14 not out, resumed to-day. but neither batsman lasted long. The English attack was handled cleverly and. as the fieldsmen backed up the bowling in admirable style, the Australians found runs hard to get. Bradman went with his total at 270 and McCabe succumbed at 22. Darling failed to open his account, but Sievcrs batted nicely for his 25 not out. The last wicket fell shortly .before the luncheon adjournment when Oldfield put his leg in front of a straight one from Verity. The bowling honours were evenly divided, with Verity and Voco eacli taking three wickets. Allen and Sims secured two each. The attack was very accurate to-day. Verity particularly keeping the batsmen subdued with ex- - cellent flighting aiul consistent length. England made a game fight in its second innings, but its position at stumps was a fairly hopeless one. The Australians' slow attack troubled the visitors, the exceptions being Hammond, Levland and Robins. FleetwoodSmith, although ho was slightly erratic in length at times, required careful watching and ho often caught the batsmen napping with his "wrong 'un." The Australian fielding was very good, the catch whjch Sievers took in dismissing Allen being a brilliant one. Scores:— AUSTRALIA First innings, nine wickets, dec. 200 Second Innings W. <J. G Bradman has made a century against England in each of four test appearances in Melbourne. Fingleton has now made five centuries in six successive test matches. He compiled a century in each of the last three tests in South Africa last season and two in the first three against England this season. Commenting on yesterday's play the Sydney Morning Herald cricket writer says Bradman stepped hack on his throne. Ho showed again that he is capable of demoralising the best of bowlers. Mailey, in the Daily Telegraph, is of the opinion that if the best team is chosen Australia will win the fourth test and will win the "ashes" in the following test.
