MEETING AT TE AROHA INTERESTING CYCLE RACES APPEARANCE OF AUSTRALIANS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE AROHA, Wednesday After two postponements on account oi : bad weather the Te Aroha Caledonian Society's sports meeting was held to-day. Chief interest centred in the 50 kilometre McLeod Derby for a stake of L'so between New Zealand and Australian riders. The course comprised 116 laps, every eighth lap carrying five, three and one points to the first, second and third man respectively, while the 64th and final laps both carried double points for the leaders. Fitzgerald, .Moore, McLeod, PI a rite and Russ represented Australia, while the, New Zealand riders were Newlove, Sutherland, Campbell, Foote, Thomas, Sheat, Willoughby, Ward and Hareourt. The match lasted more than an hour and a-lmlf and provided many thrills. Prior to the final lap Newlove, Thomas, Hareourt and Fitzgerald all had a winning chance, but in the final sprint Fitzgerald asserted himself to win narrowly from Newlove, who just beat the consistent Hareourt. The final points totals were:—Fitzgerald, 33; Newlove, 21; Hareourt, 23; Thomas, •j 1. Xone of the remaining Australians was dangerous at any stage, even their lap points total being nil. In a special tandem' match race of threequarters of a mile between Foote and Ward (New Zealand) and Moore and Plant (Australia), the New Zealand<:rs won by 10 lengths. In a special maf:h race between Thomas (Auckland) and McLeod (Australia) the Aucklander came home a winner by a wide margin. During the day Fitzger;ild attacked hi 9 own Quarter-mile standing start grass-track world record of 34 seconds and clipped one second ofT his time. Newlove also equalled Fitzgerald's 31 seconds record, put up at Springdale on Boxing .Day, from a Dying start. It takes place ordinarily on New Year's Day, but this year the day was too wet and it was postponed until to-day. Again, however, the morning broke with rain falling and the officials decided on a further postponement. The meeting will now probably be held at Easter.
