FIREBLIGHT OUTBREAK
[ORCHARDS IN CANTERBURY The worst attack of fireblight ever experienced near Christchurch has broken out among orchards, particularly in tho Papanui district, according to information gathered from growers. Their opinion was supported by fllr. B. G. Goodwin, Government orchard instructor for the district, who eaid that inspectors were at work on the outbreak and they were confident that it could be got under control, although it was prevalent over the whole Canterbury area. One orchardist at Papanui said that the .disease had been fairly common among pear trees in the past, hut an unusual feature this year was the way in which it had spread among appletrees. It had not not beyond control as far as he knew, and <he> were cutting out affected parts of trees as fast as it appeared. It had not aflected the yields to any extent, and was not causing them a great deal of worry at present.
