DEEP-SEA FISHING

SOUTHERN POSSIBILITIES MAKO SHARKS AT KAIKOURA Claims that deep-sea fishing ran bo obtained in the coastal waters of the South Island are substantiated by the report of the first catch of game fish in this island, which was made at Kaikoura on Sunday, says the Christchurch Press. A party of three fishermen, led by .Mr. P. S. Trolove, of Marlborough, a well-known deep-sea angler, and including Mr. George Francis, of Christchurch, and Mr. P. P. La id law, of Kaikoura, secured three mako sharks after a tiood day's sport off Kaikoura. The members of the party had heard reports from fishermen at Kaikoura that mako sharks were to be seen in the coastal waters of the district, and the first expedition was made on Sunday, the launch carrying standard deepsea tackle. The first mako was sighted when the launch was about two miles out from the township, and was hooked by Mr. Laidlaw. After an exciting struggle the shark was brought aboard. It fought for an hour and a-half, and measured about 7ft. Gin in length. The launch then set out for a reef, well known to local fishermen, about seven or eight miles to the north, where several mako were seen. Two lines were put out, one being trolled at a considerable depth, and the other being floated by means ol a balloon. Mr. I'rancis and Mr. Trolove each succeeded in landing a fish, their measurements being 6ft and sft. Gin. In each case the fish was hooked on a floated line. Of the other fish sighted' one was of exceptional size. Mr. Laidlaw said it was definitely indicated that it would be possible to open a deep-sea fishing season at Kaikoura. The party had proved that tingame lish could be caught, and they were going to make a further attempt at the week-end to see what other sport was available to their rods.
