MILK COUNCIL

SECOND ELECTION POLL HELD NEXT MONTH NEW CANDIDATES EXPECTED The present Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council will reach tho end of its term of ofiico on February 26, when a new council will ho elected for a term of two years. Milk producers and vendors have shown much interest in the activities of the council during the past year, and it is expected therefore that there will ho several candidates for the nine seats to he contested. The Milk Council was first set up in 1934 and its nine members were appointed by the Governor-General on tho recommendation of the Minister of Industries and Commerce. Two changes were made in tho original personnel when the first election was held in 1935. The three representatives of tho Auckland City Council, Messrs. G. W. Hutchison, S. Taklo and H. P. Burton, and the two representatives of the suburban local bodies, Messrs. I. J. Goldstine and H. F. W. Meikle, were re-elected. The producers, who are entitled to two seats, elected Messrs. J. S. Montgomcrie and A. C. Trousdale, one of the sitting members, Mr. J. Littlejohn, being defeated, while the milk vendors, who also have two seats, selected Messrs. I. Massey and F. W . Stonex, Mr. J. Haslam, a former member, losing his seat. He regained it later, however, at a bv-clection caused by the death of Mr. Stonex. City Council Members The City Council representatives are elected at a special meeting of the council, and it is possible that there may be some new nominations this year. The names of Mr. <). Purtell, secretary of the Auckland Milk Roundsmen's Union, and Messrs. J. T. Jennings and E. F. Andrews, have been mentioned as likely candidates. For the purpose of appointing the two suburban local authority members voting is done by the local bodies in the Milk Council's area. Each of the 11 local authorities is allowed one vote for every thousand of population in its district. It is considered probabl'e that the present members will be elected unopposed. Keener competition is expected for the four seats allotted to the producers and vendors. The sitting members will probably offer themselves for re-election and at least six other candidates have been mentioned. Likely candidates for the two producers' seats are Mr. M. P. Welsh, president of tho Auckland Fresh Milk Producers and Vendors' Association, Mr. J. Littlejohn, representing the North Shore Producers and Vendors' Association, and Mr. P. G. Wyinan, representing a group of highquality milk producers in the East Tamaki district. For the vendors' seats new candidates may be Mr. W. H. Madill, president of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Vendors' Association, and Messrs. It. B. Stonex and It. S. Smith. Voters' Qualifications Every milk vendor or dairyman selling or producing for sale in the Milk Council's district not less than 10 gallons and not more than 50 gallons of milk a day is entitled to exercise one vote, and, in addition, one vote for every 50 gallons over that quantity, with a maximum of five votes. If a dairyman is also a milk vendor he can be included in one roll only. The election of those members who are not City Council representatives is carried out by means of a postal ballot. Nominations close on February 16 and the secretary of the Milk Council, Mr. N. R. Chapman, will act as returning officer.
