FALL INTO A WELL
CRASH THROUGH STAGINGS RESCUE FROM ICY WATER [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday An unenviable experienco befell Mr. E. Broughton, of Pahiatua, while helping with the milking on his father's farm at Bulls yesterday. He descended into a well to fix an electric motor, but part of a staging on which ho was standing had become so rotten that it gave way, and he fell on to a second platform lower down the well. Unfortunately, the second staging was no more able to stand his weight than the first and Mr. Broughton crashed through it. Finally ho found himself plunged into seven feet of water, icy cold, and about 50 feet below the surface of the ground. Desperately clinging to a water-pipe that feeds the pump, he called for help. He was heard by a farm assistant, Mr. Trevor Blake, who hauled Mr. Broughton up by means of a rope. Except for a slight wound on the head, Mr. Broughton is none the worse for the mishap.
