INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

Kumeu. —The children of the district were entertained at a Christinas party by the institute recently. An old-time Punch and Judy show was followed by ventriloquist items by Miss Kindley, of Auckland. The Huapai schoolchildren gave musical items and a dance was presented by the tiny tots round the Christmas tree. The arrival of Father Christmas caused much excitement, particularly when he handed the children gifts from the tree. Mrs. Sherwood, president °f the institute, thanked all present who were responssibio for the success of the party. The committee who arranged the evening's enjoyment included Mrs. S. Sherwood, Mrs. J. "Wilson, Mrs. W. B. Patterson, Mrs. 11. P. Dane, Mrs. W. Malins. Mrs. ]'. Martin, Mrs, McKenzie and Mrs. Wright. Taupiri.—The monthly meeting was held in the hall, Mrs. L. E. Clarke presiding. A demonstration of flowermaking from wood pulp by Mrs. Alderwick, of Gordonton, was watched with interest. A recitation bv Mrs. Alderwick and a pianoforte solo by Miss M. Cullen were much enjoyed. Mrs. Bunn won both apron and flower competitions. The hostesses were Mesdames Sownian, Bookie, Stanley, F. W. Wilson, L. Powell, Scatehard, Bruce and Silick. Glen Massey.—The monthly meeting was held in the hall, Mrs. Tanfield presiding. The. motto was, '"Honesty is the best policy." The roll call for humorous stories caused much amusement. The cooking competition for a white sponge with jam filling was won by Mrs. Kerr. After lunch the afternoon was spent in games. Waerenga.—The November meeting took the form of a Plunket afternoon, with a bring-and-buy stall, flower competitions and items by the school children. A bouquet was presented to Mrs. Stringer, who will shortly leave the district. The hostesses were Mesdames Harris, Ellmers, Gardiner, Loftus, Holt and Sewell. Horsham Downs. —The last meeting of the year was held recently in the local hall, Mrs. Upson presiding. Some helpful suggestions Avere given iu response to the roll call for a house cleaning hint. Mr. Mayo, late of India, gave an address on the breeding and care of purebred poultry. The lending library, under the supervision of Mrs. J. J. Preest, was well patronised. The hostesses were Mrs. J. Chibnall and Miss E. Younger.

Kaplan.—.Mrs. Pegler presided over n good attendance at ttie November meeting. A lecture on tlie history of the mutiny of the Bounty was given hv Mrs. Mini. A pianoforte solo by Miss Kennh was miieli enjoyed. A competition for three varieties of roses was won by Mrs. V. E. Pegler. The hostesses were dames Murgatroyd, Young and Mofike.
