COUNTERFEIT BANKNOTES

POLICE INQUIRY CONTINUES TOTALISATOR PRECAUTIONS Inquiries were continued by detectives during the week-end into the passing of over a dozen counterfeit £5 Reserve Bank notes in Auckland on Christmas Eve. No arrest has been made. From tho caro exercised by totalisntor attendants at Ellerslie on Saturday in examining all £5 notes tendered to them, it was obvious that every precaution was being taken to guard against the circulation of counterfeit notes. The rush of betting might easily have acted as a cover for anyone attempting to pass the bogus money, but there had been sufficient warning of tho circulation of the notes to enable adequate precautions to be taken. As far as could be gathered, none of tho notes passed through tho totalisator.
