PUBLIC HOARDINGS

[BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] C HEIST CHURCH, Monday Members of the Christchurch City Council to-night refrained from discussing a request from the North Canterbury Methodist Synod that public hoardings should not be used for liquor advertisements. Mr. Lyons moved that the letter be referred to the advertising companies controlling hoardings. He said that this would let the companies know that a certain sentiment existed in a section of the community. " It is for the companies to respect it or not," he said. " The council need not take sides." This amendment was lost, and a motion previously moved by Mr. 15. LI. Andrews was carried, that the letter be referred to the town clerk, who ordinarily censors hoarding advertisements.
