INVENTIVE GENIUS

NORTH-EAST OF ENGLAND [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Nov. 28 The Marquess of Londonderry paid a tribute to the inventive genius of the north-east of England. He was opening the second Northern Exhibition of Inventions, at Newcastle. " Four of the greatest inventions of the world —the steam engine, the turbine, Swan's electric lamp, and the Armstrong gun—emanated from the north-east," Lord Londonderry said. " There is a section of the people which is rapidly diminishing, but which thinks that what was good enough for their fathers is good enough for them. "This',is extremely detrimental. We have to consider the needs of the world. We have to lead the world and direct it for the benefit of humanity." In other parts of the world, he went on, people were inclined to give more attention to research. In this country would hare to organise our research and develop it to retain our position to the world.
