THE AUCKLAND HOSPITAL

Sir, —Ever since the shortest days of winter I have been almost a daily visitor at the hospital, and although it was my privilege to be a member of the Hospital Board for very many years, 1 have never see'i as much of the inner workings of the management of the institution as during the past six months. In the early hours of the morning, as well as during the daytime and the late hours of midnight, 1 have seen the same efficient service rendered. Those who run the Auckland Hospital have not an easy task —there is' always the human element so largely in evidence. It is the desire to do well which brings out in clear perspective the good results which are finally attained, and the little imperfections of such a human institution, where it is the individual who counts every time, are just reminders "that those who do their best do well." In contrast to the selflessness within the walls of the hospital, there is the selfishness of motorists, who disobey often speed limits 011 the street and in the hospital grounds. Of all the thoughtless people I would prohibit first of all from going into tho hospital grounds are the motor-cyclists who seem to think of no one but themselves, and who delight in stampeding elderly people as well as young people in their onward noisy rush to gratify their desire for speed and noise. W. K. Howirr.
