STATE MINE IDLE

dispute on west coast HOLIDAY PAY QUESTION [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] GREYMOUTH, Monday No work was done at the Liverpool State mine to-day as a result of a dispute regarding payment for the King's birthday. The men went to the mine this morning but returned to their homes. About 250 miners are affected. It is understood that the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, refused the men's demand for payment. This is not the first occasion on which the grievance of the Liverpool mine has arisen. The holiday for the birthday of the ex-King Edward was not paid for and objections were raised, but the men did not then hold stop-work meetings. The effect of the stoppage to-day will be a delay in the fulfilment of orders, of which the mine has several which would have provided work to keep the men employed until Thursday. Unless they resume work to-morrow, they will suffer the loss of three days' pay while endeavouring to maintain their right for one day's pay. The majority of the men at the James State mine, including all the men on the coal and the truckers, stopped work on Friday for the holidays. Shift men at the James mine were working today, but they will stop work to-night.
