LABOUR SHORTAGE

PICKING OF GREEN PEAS DEMAND NOT SATISFIED [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Monday An unfortunate position has arisen for growers of green peas in the Pukekolio district. They have large quantities of peas ready to pick and there is a very ready inquiry, but difficulty is being experienced in obtaining pickers and the quantities being sent away are below those that would be available with adequate labour. Maori workers appear to be satisfied in the meantime with the income they have received from potato digging, and it is reported that they are not accepting pea-picking. With the supply of peas thus substantially below the demand, the prices have accordingly hardened.
