CHRISTCHURCH PROPOSAL TRANSFER TO CITY COUNCIL [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHIUBTCIIURCH, Monday The public library in Christchurch is controlled by the Canterbury College Council, which, in recent years, has found its revenues insufficient for the development of the library. Negotiations' have been in progress for tho Gity Council to take over the assets and administration of the library, and to-night the City Council, having been advised that the college council was willing to transfer the assets and control, agreed to place £IOOO on next year's estimates as a subsidy to tho library. It also agreed to obtain a full report on tho questions involved in tho transfer. The, college council has stipulated that it be given representation on tho body governing tho library, and that the City Council erect a new wing for the reference section. Tho City Council's subsidy carries a condition that £750 of the sum be used in equipping the reference section. As legislation will be required before the transfer can he made, tho City Council cannot at once take control of the library. The subsidy is being granted in tho meantime.
