COMMENT ON FORM LONE RAIDER'S GREAT RUN

WIN AFTER SLIP AT START {by TEUXKAPH —OWN I'OUHKSI'ONDENT] WELLINGTON, Saturday Form pointed, strongly to Mit.tie in the-Maiden. .She was a warm favourite and she won well. She did not begin as Well as one or two others, but she quickly ran to, the front anil was joined by Gaystep. They were soon well clear of Kia Ora and Reserve 13ank, tho rest of the field being strung out. Mittio and Gaystep led into the straight, where Southern Blood and Rotoma were moving up from last. Gaystep weakened, but Mittie won handily . from Rotoma, with Southern Blood a very close third. Then came Kia Ora and Gaystep, with a big gap to the others Features were tho finishing runs of Rotoma and Southern Blood, who shoikld not be long in maiden class. Gaystep showed pace. It was her first race this season, and alio looks a promising sort. Otauru King won tho Manukau Hurdles practically all tbe way, Mowgli leading over only ono fence. Otauru King gave an excellent display of jumping and, after Miss Hushabve had failed to stay with him, Limulus loomed up as a clanger. Linntlus actually had charge over the second to last fence, but she , shirked it badly and enabled Otauru. King to run away again with an unassailable lead. Limulus was able to beat Miss Hushabyo fairly comfortably for second, and Evermore was a poor fourth. Vinco, who tailed tho field, tried to run off at more than ont> fence.

The scratchings of Tlie Buzzer and Liano reduced the form in the Wcraroa Hack Handicap, and Airing was made favourite. Ho won all the way, but Export gave the supporters of the winner an anxious time and, ha<j the former not run over ..a, great deal of extra ground in the last half-mile, he would have won. As it was, ho caught the leader, but was then spent and unable to head him off. Windward and Revival did best of the others, but never looked dangerous. In a solidly-run race for the Levin Handicap, Bona Bay outstayed the pacemaker, Royal Secret, who was well clear of the winner on entering the straight, but weakened. Terry was a fair third and Grand Jury fourth, but it was either Royal Secret or Rona Bay at all stages. In the Mako Mako Handicap, Vonia Park and Quake were the pacemakers, but they ran off the course as they ran into the straight, presenting Rustem with u splendid opening, of which he took full advantage, to run home a comfortable winner, with Kara beating Jewish Lad just as comfortably. Minnow was next. Sandhedrin got badly off, after delaying the sUirt, and was never dangerous, nor was Gladium.

Essex scored a very, convincing win in the Lake Handicap. He went to the front over the last six furlongs, and had. no difficulty in keeping daylight between himself and his opponents. A fresh horse in Ingenuity stayed on better than Geitel for second money, and the rest were outclassed. Essex lias improved and shapes liko another good Siegfried stayer. The McDonald Memorial Handicap saw an outstanding performance by Lone Raider. He drew No. 1, but slipped at the start and was nearly down, losing much ground. Lord Moutoa was always handy and took charge entering the straight. He looked a certainty to win, but Lone Raider came with a sensational run and won decisively. The winner, who was having his first race for several months, showed the form which caused his party to send him to Sydney a couple of years ago. Mittie, penalised 31b. for her maiden win, won the Hokio Handicap decisively, easily cutting down Lifeguard at the finish, with tlio, favourite, Peter Beck ford, a moderate third. Card Sharper did not start, as he got cast in his box overnight.
