PERSECUTION NEEDED
VIEWS OF A BISHOP BENEFIT TO RELIGION (Received November 10, 1.55 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. IS "It is true that I said it and I cannot deny that 1 believe it," said the Bishop of Chelmsford, Dr. Henry A. Wilson, when asked whether he really meant what lie said at an induction service at Colchester about the need for "shooting half a dozen of the clergy and a few bishops." He added: "Life is too §asy in Britain, particularly in regard to religion. "We have all become complacent, selfsatisfied, smug and flabby. History has repeatedly shown that persecution has never harmed religion but has strengthened people's faith and character. I say it would be better here if somebody started persecuting us—yes, and went round shooting, a few bishops included."
