BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
NEW MAYOR INSTALLED The new Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. E. J. Osborne, was installed at a meeting of the Borough Council last night. The deputy-mayor, Mr. A. Hadfield, who presided, congratulated Mr. Osborne on his election and upon the manner in which he had placed the affairs of the borough hefore the people of Birkenhead during the campaign. He also welcomed Mrs. Osborne, and wished both a happy and successful term as Mayor and Mayoress. All members of the council and the town clerk also extended congratulations. After making the usual declaration, Mr. Osborne thanked the speakers. He outlined the programme of work he would recommend, which included an expenditure of £4OOO on improvements tci the main highways, constructing' permanent footpaths in concrete, the completion of the drainage installation, and the fullest development of the council's quarry at Takapuna. The speed limit for motor-cars within the borough was, fixed at 30 miles an hour. VACANCY ON COUNCIL CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED The nomination of Mr. John Macdonald has been, received by the returning officer for the seat on the Birkenhead Borough Council rendered vacant by the election of Mr. E. J, Osborne as Mayor. At a meeting of the Birkenhead branch of the Labour Party. Mr E. Whiteside was chosen as a candidate.
