FAT STOCK SALES

riiICES AT WESTFIELD QUALITY CATTLE SCARCE WETHERS AND LAMBS EASIER

"Well-bred, good-qualitv cattle were at a premium at yesterday's fat stock sales at Westfield. Bullocks were particularly scarce, and the yarding of cows and heifers included a majority of poor type Jersey breed. Nevertheless, the buying was brisk, and values remained on a par with those which have now ruled for 13 weeks, to 36s per 1001b. Lower grades tended to ease slightly. The heaviest bullock was a Hereford crossbred, which realised £l6 2s 6d, and top bid for cows was £ll ss. In both cases there was an. improvement of 2s 6d on the respective figures of the previous sale. For the first time in many weeks wethers were more numerous than ewes in the sheep pens. Practically all < stock was shorn, and average quality | was available, there being a lack of heavy sheep. Wethers reached 30s 6d, the same as a week ago, but there was a general tendency over the sale for values to depreciate. On the other hand, values for ewes were very firm, again making a top price of 23s 6d. Hoggets realised to 28s Gd, which was slightly more than last week's best offer. Lower Lamb Values In keeping with the lowering of the export schedule rates, lamb values were somewhat cheaper, in spite of a ready demand. They ranged from 18s 6d to 28s 6d, whereas a week ago they made to 325. There was a good entry and bidding was keen throughout, although the quality was not outstanding. Quality similar to that offered in the calf market over a long period again confronted buyers. Smaller numbers were yarded than has been the ease recently, and lower values obtained for the heavier vealers, 110s, against 113s last week, although quotations were firm for the light and medium classes. Values for pork pigs recovered portion of their decline at last sale and baeoners were steady at the reduced rates, pound averages remaining unaltered at 6ld and s?d respectively. Farmers seeking pigs to be fattened on their surplus buttermilk were again responsible for the better demand for porkers. Some stores showed a little improvement. Comparison o!
