NEED OE UNIFOIiMITY __ SUGGESTIONS BY MAYOR EFFICIENCY AND ECONOMY Tho benefit to bo derived by the public from a system of uniform control of traffic in tho Auckland metropolitan area wan emphasised by tho Mayor, Mr. Finest IDavis, in his memorandum to tlio meeting of tho Metropolitan Committee on Tuesday night. Ho said there was already a measure of co-operation between the city and the contiguous local authorities, particularly in tho issue of various types of licences, while tho city traffic department assisted in some of the outer areas when exceptional traffic was drawn to sports meetings and races in those areas. There was, however, a need for a uniform system of control, particularly in districts through which arterial roads ran, said Mr. Davis. In the case of the Great South Road, which might bo considered tho chief traffic artery through the metropolitan area, thero were three local bodies controlling various sections in tho built-up area. Tho employment of officers mounted on motor-cycles would permit fairly lengthy sections of tho main thoroughfares to bo patrolled more effectively and economically than was done at prosent. Tho extensjve uso of motor-vehicles for commercial purposes in the city emphasised the need for uniform by-laws for the control of parking, added Mr. Davis. The issue of a singlo booklet containing tho by-laws applying over the whole area would be greatly appreciated and would promote a closer observance of tho by-laws, particularly in tho suburbs. "There is, in my opinion, a wido field for co-operation 011 tho question of the development in tho community of traffic safety first principles, or in other words the promotion of safety consciousness," continued tho Mayor. "In this connection I think we should all realise that synonymous with safety consciousness is safety conscientiousness. It is my intention again this year, just before Christmas, to institute a traffic 'safety first week,' and 1 take advantage of this opportunity to invite the suburban local authorities to assist me. If one life only be saved as a result, tho effort is justified."
