CLERGYMAN'S VISIT
OLDEST LONDON CHURCH DOMINION AT SMITHFIELD "Almost every day in London I see the carcases of thousands of prime New j Zealand lambs, and I thought it was | time I saw something of them on their ! native pastures," said Canon E. S. I Savage, rector of St. Bartholomew the ; Great, Sinithfield, 011 his arrival by the ! lLangitata yesterday 011 a visit to New 1 Zealand. 1 Canon Savage has passed through New Zealand before on his way to Australia, where, a few years ago, as he says with some pride, he dipped 10,000 sheep on a friend's station. As chief commissioner for the Y.M.C.A. in the Mediterranean during the Great War, he came into contact with hundreds of New Zealand soldiers at Mudros, Malta, Alexandria and other places. For his services to the Serbian Red Cross and for the relief of the civil population he was awarded the Order of St. Sava and the military rank of major bv the late King Peter. The Holy Orthodox Church conferred upon him the Order of the Golden Cross, the insignia of which, a massive pectoral cross of repousse gold, lie habitually wears. Speaking of his work in London, Canon Savage said St. Bartholomew's was the oldest London church, a very beautiful building dating in part from the Norman period, and one of the few city churches that escaped the Great I.' ire. It was close to Smithfield Market, and an annual service was held there for the butchers. He was also honorary chaplain to the Butchers' Company. Canon Savage left yesterday for Rotorua, where he will spend some time fishing as the guest of Mr. Oliphant Shaw, who also arrived bv the tata.
